Light Up the Sky for Nurses!

Nurses Light Up the Sky is not only a beautiful way to honor nurses, it drives awareness among the general public and a wider community that can generate interest, local press stories, social sharing, and pride among nurses during National Nurses Week. 

Last year ANE illuminated 206 buildings in honor of nurses during NNW. This year we’re aiming for 250 (America's 250th Anniversary) – and you can help! If you have suggestions for buildings, landmarks, monuments and/or healthcare hubs in your state – please emails us at: NursesWeek@ana.org.

AI must support, not replace, professional nursing judgment.

Artificial intelligence holds tremendous potential to improve healthcare, but that potential can only be realized when AI is introduced with deliberate safeguards and meaningful nursing involvement.

Nurses must remain the accountable decision-makers for patient care. AI can inform professional judgment, but it cannot replace the clinical reasoning, ethical responsibility, human connection, and whole-person perspective that nurses bring to every care setting.

ANA is working to ensure that nurses are not simply users of emerging technologies. Nurses must help shape the decisions that determine how these technologies affect patients, the workforce, and the future of healthcare.

Consensus findings from the AI in Nursing Practice Think Tank

On April 22, 2026, ANA convened nursing leaders and experts from practice, education, research, regulation, industry, and policy for the inaugural ANA AI in Nursing Practice Think Tank.

Designed as a working consensus convening, the Think Tank examined how AI is already affecting nursing, identified the most significant risks facing the profession, and established shared principles for the responsible use of AI in healthcare.

The resulting report, Artificial Intelligence in Nursing Practice: Consensus Findings from the ANA AI in Nursing Practice Think Tank, provides a foundation for nurse-led action.

Across the American Nurses Enterprise, we are addressing artificial intelligence on multiple fronts, from establishing ethical standards and recognizing excellence in practice to investing in nurse-led innovation. Establishing Ethical Standards for AI in Nursing 

ANA’s position statement on the ethical use of AI in nursing practice calls for technologies that support professional nursing judgment rather than replace it, while protecting patient safety and ensuring nurses remain central to decisions affecting patient care.

The American Nurses Credentialing Center presented Atrium Health Union with the ANCC Pathway Award® for a nurse-designed framework that prepares nurses to work effectively alongside AI and provides a model that can be scaled across healthcare.

Investing in Nurse-Led Innovation

Through a $1.5 million grant from the American Nurses Foundation, ChristianaCare launched the nation’s first nursing research fellowship in robotics, giving bedside nurses a leading role in evaluating AI-enabled technologies for direct patient care.
